“Sonic at the Olympic Games – Tokyo 2020”, when I first read it, I had to go through it again just to make sure I was reading it right, and once I was certain that the title wasn’t going to change itself because of me re-reading it, my day couldn’t get worse.

After years of running the marathons together, Sonic and Mario have parted their ways. Sega is bound to launch Sonic at the Olympic Games – Tokyo 2020 today, the 7th of April 2020. The game will be available on Google Play, App Store, and Amazon Appstore. Though as of yet, nothing can be said regarding the game’s release on the Nintendo Switch.

For those who have been living in a cave up till now and are knocked sideways by this news, Sega had already launched Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 last November, and the legacy will continue, at least for now.

Here is Why You Need to be Excited

The Olympic game will feature most of the appealing characters that have made an appearance in the Sonic games so far. These include:

  • Sonic
  • Tails
  • Knuckles
  • Amy
  • Vector
  • Espio
  • Blaze
  • Silver
  • Eggman
  • Metal Sonic
  • Shadow
  • Zavok
  • Zazz
  • Jet
  • Rouge
  • Eggman Nega.

As far as the Olympic games are concerned, most of the events will be making it into the game as well, such as:

  • 400 Hurdles
  • 100m
  • Hammer Throw
  • Archery
  • Badminton
  • Shooting-Trap
  • Diving- 3m Springboard
  • Trampoline
  • Karate
  • Sport Climbing
  • Fencing
  • BMX
  • Long Jump
  • Table Tennis
  • Javelin Throw

Other than these, you will also find yourself staring at the screen to make it through some mini games on the side, and that too, quite often! There will be different characters associated with each of these mini games. Anyways, the minigames include:

  • TOKYO Sky Tree Jump
  • Quiz Challenge
  • Egg Pawn Rush
  • Number Lock
  • Claw Game
  • Souvenir Search

Most of these games are just rebadged versions of the games that you have already played on your pocket devices before.

Finally, how can they include Eggman in the game, without it going nuts and all over the place? Well, the game will also include a story mode in which you will have to go up against Eggman, AGAIN, to save the city!

Most of the game will be dependent on your timings and the frequency of the taps you make on your device’s screen.

Alright, the game has gained all the attention it wanted, but where is the actual Tokyo 2020? Well, it won’t be happening anytime this year. You heard me! Sega has managed to put two titles out into the market based on an event that isn’t even happening. Will there be another title from the developers for the Olympics, if they are to take place in 2021? Will we keep getting two titles from the same developers at each Olympic event, like this time? I believe Sega has come up with another title as a marketing tactic to target the mobile gaming industry!

Whatever the actual case might be, for now, charge up your devices, roll over and give your Sonic a little boost.
